2009 Perennial of the year - HAKONECHLOA AUREOLA. This is a handsome, slow creeping, deciduous grass. Even though it is a creeper, it is never invasive. It grows in shade, where its light color illuminates a shadowy area. It displays golden variegated leaves. During the cooler months of spring and fall, the leaves take on red to pink tints.
2009 Herb of the year - Laurus Nobilis or SWEET BAY LAUREL is native to the Mediterranean. In Zones 8-10 in the U.S., it can grow from 6 to 25 feet. In our colder Zone 5 area, it is adaptable to pot growing. When potted it can be grown outdoors in summer and as an ordinary houseplant in winter.
